Coffee bean test filter - before you start

The coffee bean test begins before we even open the package. The first thing we focus on is all the information that our roasters share with us on the packaging and online. What matters most to us here is the details. What type of beans is in the package? Is it a blend or a single origin? On which farm was the coffee grown? The more details you get here, the better. That's exactly why the first part of our tests is to sort and list this information for you.

Here we would like to introduce you to some of our tested coffees. We have tried to put together a wide selection of countries of origin and species here. From washed to natural, from caffeine to caffeine-free. There is definitely something for you here.

SUEDHANG Pegasing

This filter coffee from SUEDHANG comes from Hendra Maulizar. It comes in the classic pack with a cuff and can be easily closed again. Typical for SUEDHANG: You get all the important information directly on the packaging. Even special highlights such as cupping score and ground conditions can be found on the outside. The roasting date is of course also stated. The coffee is a mixture of different types of Arabica.

The flavor notes given are more than interesting. Cloudberries, jasmine, peach. Of course, you can find out below whether the coffee in our coffee bean test comes close to these detailed aromas!

Industra.Coffee Xochiltepec

This wild pack comes from the Czech Republic. More precisely from Brno. Petra and Adam from Industra.Coffee roast some of the most interesting coffees from all over the world here. The Xochiltepec comes from Sierra Sur, Oaxaca. There are also very interesting flavors on the packaging of this coffee. Pineapple and panela? We are excited!

Here too you can find the roasting date on the package. Freshness guaranteed. What we think is particularly great about Industra coffees is the grid. Here they place each coffee on a grid. From mild to wild, from citrus to chocolate. Judging by the grid, we have a mild coffee in the citrus range. The pack with a snap closure is also super easy to close again. This means your coffee stays fresh for days even after opening.

Father's Luz Marina Filter

Here we have another specialty coffee from the Czech Republic. After a short stint as a barista at Five Elephant in Berlin, the founders decided to open their own roastery in Ostrava. They have been roasting excellent coffee there ever since. The single-origin coffee Luz Marina Filter comes from a renowned Peruvian coffee region. The beans are grown at El Guayaquil Farm in the Chirinos district of Cajamarca. The couple Cleyder and Marina manage this thirty-hectare farm at an altitude of almost 1,800 meters, surrounded by Guabas Pajuros trees.

From Father's you'll find out pretty much everything you need to know. From the farm to the varieties processed, completely transparent. We also always notice the elaborately designed packaging. The design is adjusted seasonally. In order to keep the full taste of your coffee in the pack for as long as possible, it can be easily closed again.

Francis & Nino take coffee seriously. You can tell that from the packaging. Everything you need to know is right there on the label. No wonder, because both of them are committed to sustainability and fair purchasing prices. With this filter coffee from Brazil you also have the name of the farm directly in the name. Sitio Serra Pelada is owned by Farmer Jaci and is located about 9 km from the town of Petunia. The district of the municipality of Nova Resende, is located in the south of the state of Minas Gerais.

The coffee is prepared using the natural process. This means that the pulp still remains on the bean when it dries. The flavor notes therefore include dried fruits, among other things. The filter coffee from We Roast Coffee is also the cheapest coffee in this test.

Of course, we also want to give decaffeinated coffee a stage in our coffee bean test. This time the filter coffee from Mexico from Ohne is included. The roastery is fully committed to roasting caffeine-free coffees. So if you can't tolerate caffeine or are looking for an alternative for the evening, you've come to the right place.

The Mexico filter is decaffeinated using the CO₂ method. If you would like to find out more about decaffeinated coffee, here is the right article for you. At Ohne you will of course also find all the information you need as a coffee fan. Growing region, flavor notes, bean variety – without it, we won’t be left in the dark. A little bit of information on the side: the Mexico filter is currently waiting for its organic certification. The cooperative farms in Mexico from which Ohne sources the green beans already meet the criteria for this.

The coffee bean test – roasting and taste

Now that we have looked at the individual coffees in detail, we now move on to the correct coffee bean test. What do the beans look like and, above all, how does the coffee taste? To do this, we looked at all the coffees closely together with Marian and then brewed them using our basic recipe. Marian is an operations specialist for us and previously worked as a barista and coffee owner. He ran Happy Baristas in Berlin for years and is now responsible for quality control and roastery management at 60beans.

Bean image and roasting

First, let's look at the beans before grinding. Can defects be identified? What does the roasting look like? You can learn a lot about the quality of a coffee by taking a closer look at the beans. Are the beans very oily, do they contain a lot of breakage or so-called elephant ears? Then it is probably an industrial roast of lower quality. We also pay attention to even roasting. Simply put, this means that the beans are all a similar color.

Bean picture : Very good bean picture. Hardly any bean defects. Virtually no breakage.

We Roast Coffee | Serra Pelada

Roasting : Very even medium roast without any particular abnormalities.
Bean Image : Excellent bean image. Hardly any noticeable defects or breakage.

Without | Mexico filter

Roasting : Very even, slightly darker roast without any particular abnormalities.
Bean appearance : Good bean appearance with barely noticeable breaks or other defects.

All in all, all of the beans we tested meet our criteria and have hardly any defects or breakages. Even the cheapest contender in our coffee bean test from We Roast Coffee passes with flying colors. In terms of roasting and bean appearance, it is in no way inferior to the other coffees. Quite the opposite - he even performs a little better than average.

Taste test

Now it's time to get down to business. We brew all the coffees in our coffee bean test and taste them together. So that we can optimally compare the coffees with each other, we always brew them using the same method. Three pours with a target time of around three minutes. For this we use the Hario V60 filter. Grinding is done with the Mahlkönig X54 Home. We have set this constantly to a grinding level of 20.

Please remember that you should adjust the coffee at home to suit your taste. For example, some of the coffees we tested would have benefited from a slightly finer grind, others from a slightly coarser one.

As soon as we opened the package, we were impressed by the wonderful smell of this coffee. Then the surprise in the cup. The coffee actually hits the notes stated. For us, the notes of jasmine and peach were particularly present. The coffee also had a very pleasant mouthfeel. Overall, the Pegasing completely convinced us in the tasting.

Industra.Coffee Xochiltepec

The Xochiltepec tastes like a classic washed coffee from Mexico. The color is a little lighter and the coffee is medium bodied. We taste a little sourness, but it is perfectly balanced by the sweetness. Overall, this coffee seems very harmonious. With this coffee, Industra.Coffee shows what beans from Mexico can do. A wonderfully balanced cup.

Father's Luz Marina Filter

Father's has already more than convinced us when cupping another coffee. The Luz Marina also hits the mark. A wonderfully balanced coffee with nutty notes and high sweetness. The beans have a distinctly soft mouthfeel. Here you can taste the origin with every sip. We would go a little bit finer with the grind to further emphasize these advantages.

Conclusion: a wonderfully balanced coffee that excellently highlights the characteristics of Peru.

We Roast Coffee Serra Pelada

Nutty aromas and caramel dominate here, paired with a nice sweetness. Typical of Brazilian coffees, we hardly have any acid here. We would definitely recommend grinding something to celebrate with this coffee. Then you get a wonderfully balanced cup that will especially appeal to fans of classic coffee flavors.

Last but not least, our decaffeinated coffee from Ohne from Mexico. Mexico is known for a wide range of coffee flavors. This ranges from light coffees to strong notes such as toffee and chocolate. With the coffee from Ohne we tend to move in the latter direction. This is also highlighted by the slightly darker roast. We mainly taste chocolate flavors here. Nevertheless, the coffee is not too powerful.

Our opinion: absolutely delicious coffee that can easily make a whole family happy. Especially those who can't tolerate caffeine!

The setup

At the end we want to take a look at the setup for our coffee bean test. Here we mainly relied on basic equipment from trusted manufacturers. Why? So that we can be as close as possible to your home setup while achieving reproducible results. Of course, there are also cheaper alternatives for enjoying at home. Fellow Stagg kettle :

The Fellow Stagg is our daily companion when it comes to filter coffee. The electric kettle heats your water precisely to the desired temperature. In our tests we can guarantee that we always brew at a constant temperature. The built-in elements are easy to use and the keep-warm function guarantees you a perfect brewing temperature even after 5 minutes. The gooseneck also makes watering very easy. ‍

Mahlkönig X54 :

The Mahlkönig X54 is currently one of the best coffee grinders for home use. This can be used to grind not only filter coffee, but also espresso. The mill has several meal presets. The grinding level can be precisely adjusted using the large wheel on the side of the housing. Here it is effortless to switch from a coarse setting for filter coffee to a fine grinding level for espresso. The grinding result is, as you would expect from Mahlkönig, excellent.

Hario V60

The V60 is an absolute classic when it comes to filter coffee. They are available in a wide variety of designs. We used the copper version for our coffee bean test and used a metal pitcher. In our shop you can order, among other things, the plastic and porcelain versions. The right filter papers are of course also available.

Acaia Pearl :

Here, too, it's about precision. For consistent results when brewing, you need a scale. We used the ACAIA coffee scale in our coffee bean test. However, there are fantastic products here for significantly less money. A little tip: a model with a built-in timer makes brewing much easier. Here you don't need to take out your cell phone to stop time.
