Filter coffee preparation with the V60

How do you make really good filter coffee with the V60?

One of the most popular methods for brewing really good coffee is definitely the hand filter! Timeless, simple and quick – with the right technique you get a great result and the coffee surprises with clear, strong aromas. For this brewing method you only need 3 affordable elements! The hand filter holder made of plastic, glass or ceramic, such as the V60 from Hario , a heat-resistant glass carafe and the right filter paper . You can find everything you need in our hand filter starter set . The hand filter holder is available in two sizes. 01 for 1-2 cups, 02 for 1-4 cups. Make sure that you buy the right filter papers depending on the size. Here are a few simple steps on how to brew your specialty filter coffee with the V60 hand filter from Hario.

1. Freshly grind your coffee beans.

It is best to always grind the coffee for the Hario V60 hand filter fresh shortly before preparation and with a medium grinder setting. The structure of the ground coffee should be reminiscent of industrial salt.

2. Fold the filter and bring water to the boil.

Now fold your filter and boil water. For the V60 size 02 you need approx. 20 g of coffee powder. For this amount of coffee you need 300 ml of water. If you cannot adjust the temperature on your kettle, allow the brewing water to cool for one minute and 30 seconds after boiling. The perfect water temperature for the V60 hand filter is 91-95 degrees. However, we recommend that you start at the lower end, i.e. at around 91 degrees, and work your way up. The hotter the water, the more bitter substances are released from the ground coffee.

3. Rinse the filter.

Place the filter in the V60 filter and pour a little hot water through the filter into the jug. The filter should only be wetted very lightly here. Swirl the jug and then pour the water out again. This warms your pot while eliminating the papery taste of the filter.

4. Pour in the coffee powder.

Now place the V60 filter and jug on the scales. Now fill the 20 g of freshly ground coffee into the filter. Set the scale back to 0 and start a stopwatch.

5. Wet the ground coffee

First, you should evenly moisten the coffee powder in the filter with a small amount of water, making circular movements. Pour approx. 60 g of water here and wait 30 seconds until the next brewing interval. The goal is for all of the powder to be completely wetted, but at the same time as little coffee as possible should drip through the filter. If the coffee swells nicely here, that is a sign of the freshness of the coffee beans!

6. Pour in the hot water.

Now pour 60 g again in circular movements. The scale should therefore read 120 g. Wait another 30 seconds (timer is now at 1:00) until the next 60g interval. At minute 1:30, pour up to 240 g. Try not to interrupt the process. In the last minute (minute 2) we pour up to 300 g. Then remove the filter and stir the coffee with a spoon to mix the coffee. And voilà: Now you can pour your coffee from the carafe and enjoy!
