SUEDHANG coffee roasting company

In the heart of Tübingen, Robin and Martin not only opened the doors of their café called SUEDHANG two years ago. Their numbers are also available online for anyone who is interested. Everyone should be able to see for themselves whether the relevant ethical requirements are being met. SUEDHANG is also a coffee roasting company: light roasted coffee is the founders' declared passion. They enjoy experimenting and are breaking new ground with Canephora or drinks they have developed themselves. They also enjoy writing articles and books on a variety of coffee topics. But the highest feeling is and remains: being able to offer coffee lovers a cup that makes the difference. Which is a piece of quality of life. As activists, the Tübingen coffee roasters are, among other things, initiating a protest against the higher VAT on vegan milk alternatives. And they're trying to develop a regional solution for oat milk in reusable containers. Not for themselves. But for everyone!‍

  • What makes your products so special?

Oh. Strictly speaking, no product is special. Everything is interchangeable. We love and make coffee. This is our passion, this is why we get up in the morning. If our pedantic attention to detail for roasting profiles, flavor nuances, fair business, responsible consumption, design and preparation is transferred to our customers to the extent that coffee is consumed mindfully, and that preparing and drinking it becomes a contemplation, then our products are special. Otherwise not.

  • What's the craziest thing you've ever done for coffee?

We, or rather Mik, had the chutzpah to give Canephora (colloquially: Robusta) the attention in terms of sourcing, light roast profile and coordinated preparation that is usually only given to specialty Arabica. Since then, we have seen ourselves as pioneers when it comes to fine canephora. Our understanding is particularly expressed in the title of Mik's new book: "I will have your fruitiest, funkiest most fermented Canephora on the menu."

  • Which coffee are you particularly proud of?

Especially on MUYU, our Peruvian medium roast espresso. Before our opening in 2020, there was nothing specialty coffee in Tübingen. And we were afraid that we might be met with a lack of understanding with an espresso that was too modern in our first grinder. But not at all! MUYU has been embraced since day one and is, for many, the entry point into the world of specialty coffee.
