All filter coffees that you can buy from us are so-called specialty coffees. But what does that mean exactly? Specialty Coffee is a name for coffees that have been graded by independent experts, also known as Q or R graders. These experts taste the coffee according to specific criteria. Only coffees that achieve a score of over 80 on a scale of 0 to 100 can be called specialty coffee. In order to achieve this high score, responsible cultivation, careful harvesting, correct preparation and gentle roasting are required. This is the only way the aromas of the coffee can fully emerge. If you want to buy the best filter coffee, you have come to the right place.

Coffee for filter coffee vs. coffee for espresso

Before we get into the details of filter coffee and how it is prepared, let's take a look at the essentials: What is filter coffee anyway? Filter coffee is brewed through a filter using special coffee beans and hot water. During the brewing process, the filter paper ensures that the coffee powder is retained and only the best ends up in the pot. This method removes unwanted residues such as coffee grounds and creates a particularly clear, aromatic coffee.

Among our specialty coffees you will find lighter and darker roasts. Light to medium dark roasts are particularly suitable for filter coffee because the entire aroma spectrum, fruity notes and fine acids of the coffee can develop better here.

In general, we advise against very dark roasts. Our roasters ensure gentle roasting in order to avoid burnt beans, which contain too many bitter substances.

The different methods of making filter coffee

There are different methods to prepare your filter coffee. Each method has its own advantages and creates very different flavor profiles. There is definitely the right morning filter coffee ritual for you!

The French Press

The French press , also known as a stamp pot, is one of the most popular methods for preparing really good filter coffee. The ground coffee is placed in the French press, poured with hot water and then pressed down with a round filter. Because the coffee is in contact with the water throughout the extraction time, it is ground slightly coarser than with other methods. The extraction time is usually around 4:30 minutes and the water should be at a temperature of around 95°C. In our online shop you will find a large selection of coffees for your French press . You will also find step-by-step instructions for preparation with the French press.

Pour over

In the pour-over method, ground coffee is placed in a conical container, hot water is slowly poured over it, and the liquid runs through a filter into a container below. There are different variations of this method, each extracting different flavors from the coffee. You can find all of our pour-over coffee makers here . For example, we exclusively have the exciting Stagg XF Pour Over Dripper from Fellow in our range.

In addition to the right coffee maker, the choice of filter is also essential. It also affects the taste of your coffee. Here you will find the best coffees for your pour-over method.

Aeropress

The Aero Press is a relatively new brewing method, invented in 2005. It is inexpensive, robust, easy to transport and clean. The Aero Press offers a wide range of preparation options. The simplest method involves pouring coffee and water into the brewing chamber, and after about two minutes the coffee is pressed through a sieve with a small paper filter.

The coffee in the Aero Press can be used with different roasts because the brewing time is shorter. There are no limits to creativity here. Here you will find the best coffees for your Aero Press.
